Artemis I sera le premier test en vol intégré du système d'exploration de l'espace lointain de la NASA : le vaisseau spatial Orion, la fusée Space Launch System (SLS) et les systèmes au sol du Kennedy Space Center à Cap Canaveral, en Floride. Première d'une série de missions de plus en plus complexes, Artemis I sera un vol sans équipage qui fournira une base pour l'exploration humaine de l'espace lointain et démontrera notre engagement et notre capacité à étendre l'existence humaine jusqu'à la Lune et au-delà. Au cours de ce vol, le vaisseau spatial Orion sans équipage se lancera sur la fusée la plus puissante du monde et parcourra des milliers de kilomètres au-delà de la Lune, plus loin que n'importe quel vaisseau spatial construit pour les humains n'a jamais volé, au cours d'une mission d'environ trois semaines.
